Chronicles of a Miner – Chapter One – The Adventure Begins

It was a typical Summers morning when everything started. I was sorting out my backpack, ready for a day of hunting and resource gathering. By now, I was used to this planet. Four years here and life was finally settling although I still have no recollection of how I came upon this strange place. Anyway, I finished packing my bag and I was finally ready to set out. The sun was still rising but it was bright enough to see. I could see monsters burning, like they always did and after they had died, I picked up their resources and put them in my bag.

I would normally walk around for a bit, killing the odd animal for food and gathering all the resources I could. That day was different. I was walking on some land that I had not been to before, hoping to find some extravagant new animal or food but instead I found something that would change my life forever. A sanctum. I stared down into the gaping hole and could see myself in the reflection of the glimmering water that lay at the bottom. I opened my backpack and brought out a rope and claw that I had packed, for abseiling. I found a nearby rock and dug the claw into the soft earth behind it, wrapping part of the rope around the rock itself. I then tied the end of the rope around my waist and walked to the edge of the cliff.

The fear inside me started to fade, as I landed the first jump successfully. My feet hit the rocky surface and I started to lower myself down. The next thing that happened was quick. I could feel the rope pulling and suddenly, I felt myself falling towards the water. When I woke up, it was dark outside. I was staring at the starry sky with my back to the water. I was trapped. Alongside me, lay the rope and claw, it was clear to me that the claw had released itself, causing me to fall. I looked around, to see what would happen now. Would I be stuck here and starve to death?

Just as I was beginning to give up hope, I noticed I small crevice in the side of the rocky wall. On further inspection, I noticed that it was large enough for me to squeeze through. I put my legs through first, then my body and arms, then my head. I started to crawl through the gap and kept going for what must have been an hour. My legs were aching now and I needed to get out of here. I could see what looked to be an opening at the end of this tunnel and kept going until I reached it. It led to a large opening, pitch black, with only a small light, presumably moonlight, seeping through a hole at the top. I could hear a rushing sound and moved closer to the source of the noise. As I drew closer, I noticed that it was, in fact, water. This place was going to fill up and I needed to get out of here. Fast.

To Be Continued…

Four years here and life was finally settling in, although I still have no recollection of how I came upon this strange, deserted place. I finished packing my bag and set out upon the land. I could see monsters burning in the sun; their parts left behind for me to pick up.

I would normally walk around for a bit, killing the odd animal for food and gathering all the resources I could, but that day was different; I was exploring a place that I had not been to before, hoping to find some extravagant new animal or food but instead I came across something that would change my life. A sanctum. I stared down into the gaping hole and could see myself in the reflection of the glimmering water that lay at the bottom. I opened my backpack and brought out a rope and hook, hoping to abseil down. I found a sturdy rock nearby and dug the hook into the soft earth beneath it, wrapping part of the rope around the rock itself. I then tied the end of the rope around my waist and approached the edge of the cliff cautiously.

The fear inside me soon started to fade however, as I stepped down onto the rock face successfully and carefully made my way down, not daring to look. Suddenly, after only a few feet of abseiling, my rope came loose and as much as I tried, I could not prevent myself tumbling into the water below. I was out cold.

When I woke up, it was dark. I was staring at the starry sky with my back to the water, knowing the monsters would be returning to surface to hunt. I was trapped. Alongside me in the water, lay the rope and hook, it was clear to me that the hook had released itself, causing me to fall. I searched anxiously for a way out. A solution for escape. Would I be stuck here and starve?
